Abstract:
Administrative boundaries of local government fire department (LGFD) boundaries in Montana. This was part of a project defining the LGFD boundaries in 29 Montana counties (Beaverhead, Broadwater, Carbon, Cascade, Chouteau, Deer Lodge, Fergus, Flathead, Gallatin, Glacier, Granite, Jefferson, Judith Basin, Lake, Lewis & Clark, Lincoln, Madison, Meagher, Mineral, Missoula, Park, Pondera, Powell, Ravalli, Sanders, Silver Bow, Teton, Toole, and Wheatland). This data was developed under RFP No.: 005500-CSB and the GIS research and analysis was provided by Geodata Services, Inc., Missoula, Montana.

Purpose: For display of local government fire department boundaries for 29 Montana counties.

Use Constraints:
The boundaries were mapped by local government sources and do not necessarily represent the exact legal boundaries created by petitions and annexations. The data layer was designed for internal use by Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) and is maintained on a continuous but intermittent basis. DNRC does not guarantee the accuracy of the data, nor that it is up to date. This data is not intended for use at scales greater than 1:100000. This data is not for accurate determination of section corner or property line locations.

The DNRC provided list was assumed to be the authoritative list of local government fire departments. The data received from the county was assumed to be the authoritative data for local government fire department boundaries. No independent check was made of the data against courthouse records, other maps or any other source. The source for local government fire department boundaries was the most recent version available from the county.
Logical Consistency Report:
The local government fire department boundaries were digitized for each county. The data received from each county was accepted as is. Overlapping departments were reported to the county and corrections recorded if available. The data was visually inspected for overshoots and underhangs. All polygon topology was built in ArcInfo to insure topological consistency. In areas requiring manual digitizing, snapping was used to prevent overshoots and underhangs. Where multiple datasets or multiple data sources were proved for a county, slivers were often created when the datasets were merged. The final local government fire department boundary layer may have had small slivers removed through a combination of automated and manual methods. It was not possible to remove all the slivers, some remain.

According to Rick Hartz, the Grant Volunteer Fire Company is part of the Dillon VFD. The Wise River VFC and the Grasshopper Valley VFC are operating fire companies but do not have a boundary or defined area.

Omissions and additions to the list of local government fire departments were provided to the contracting officer. The local government fire department boundaries are often changed through petitions and resolutions

Create local government fire department boundaries for 24 Montana counties.
The contracting officer provided a digital list of all local government fire departments.
Coincident lines were selected from County Administrative boundaries, 1:100000 PLSS, or 5th-code HUC boundaries. These data layers were provided by NRIS at the Montana State Library. On the exterior of a county, only the county administrative boundaries will be used. In the interior of a county, PLSS or 5th-code HUC boundaries will be used where coincident.
